Advisory Board
The Heart’s Rest Advisory Board meets intermittently to guide the vision of Heart’s Rest and to provide support to the principals of Heart’s Rest. These are the current Advisory Board members.
GINA and BRUCE ANDERSON
Bruce and Gina are the principals of Community Activators, a company that implements innovative community development and social service practices across the United States, presenting more than 100 learning events a year focused on Hope, Welcoming, Gifts and Cultural story-telling to build up community health. This is Bruce’s full-time work; Gina currently divides her time between Community Activators and her work as a hospital chaplain and her writing about prayer and healing.

KATHY and KEN BERNHARDT
Kathy is an active member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Atlanta and volunteer executive director of HAVE Foundation that supports education in northeast Honduras. Ken is Taylor E. Little Jr. Professor of Marketing and Special Assistant to the Dean for Corporate and Community Relations at Georgia State University’s Robinson College of Business, board chair of the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta and past-chair of the 45,000-member American Marketing Association.

MONICA and STEVE CASE
Monica is a Project Manager for Dell and is based at the Phoenix office of Catholic Healthcare West and is active in First Christian Church of Scottsdale, Arizona where she served as an Elder. Steve is an attorney serving St. Vincent de Paul, Phoenix Diocese as General Counsel and is on the Advisory Boards of The Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University and The Arizona Community Foundation.

ANNE CHAMPAGNE
Anne has a master’s degree in environmental studies and has worked for 30 years for environmental groups as a researcher/writer/editor. She is on a life-long spiritual quest with special interests in Buddhism, women’s issues and progressive social change. She serves on the planning task group for spirituality and environment workshops at Heart’s Rest, as well as the facilitating group for the Convergence Writers’ Retreat.

Wayne is the President of the Board of Trustees of Turner-Zion Pastoral Charge of the United Church of Canada, Silverton, B.C. He has served the community as a director for the Regional District of the Central Kootenays; he has also been a hard rock miner and local grocery store owner.

JULIA BANNER SPENCE
Julia is the Vice President of Human Resources and Communications for a US nationally recognized remodeling firm that specializes in environmental sustainability. For the past 30 years, she has been an active member of Portland’s First Unitarian Church, and served on a number of non-profit boards: Volunteers of America of Oregon, The Natural Step (education on decision-making toward environmental sustainability), EarthShare of Oregon (workplace giving to environmental groups). She currently serves on the Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon Development Committee.

ELIZABETH DEY STEWART
Dey has lived in Nelson since the mid-70s, with the exception of training a period in Zurich, where she obtained her Doctoral degree in Analytic Psychology. She has worked in Mental Health and Addictions as well as her private practice as a Jungian psychotherapist. An avid gardener and lover of silence (of which there never seems to be enough), she is active in her local Anglican Church as well as the Contemplative Society of British Columbia.

IVY THOMAS
Ivy is an Ordained Minister in the United Church of Canada serving as Conference Minister for the Kamloops-Okanagan Presbytery in British Columbia. She is also a trained practitioner in Family Systems and Circle communications, as well as a skilled retreat leader and consultant.

DONNA JEAN and GARY WRIGHT
Donna Jean is a shop owner in New Denver, former professional musician, society board member for many local groups, and serves in a volunteer capacity for Heart’s Rest retreats. Gary is the recently retired Mayor of New Denver (23 years) and retired Board Chair of the Regional District of the Central Kootenays. He is interested in ways to build local sustainable communities.

JANICE YOUNG
Janice is an Ordained Minister in the United Church of Canada serving a congregation in Sechelt, British Columbia. Janice has also served as Conference President of the BC Conference of the United Church of Canada. In her ministry, she is working to form new relationships between the church and members of the Sechelt Band, and is passionate about working with her Aboriginal neighbours to heal the wounds caused by Indian Residential Schools.
